Mother accuses daugther's lifelong best friend of theft after money goes missing: 'I acted normal when my friend left today, but inside I'm hurt, disappointed, and honestly a little resentful'

Is it an attack on her character or just a matter of timing?

When something goes missing, we tend to think of anyone who's not family as an intruder. For instance, the other day I was crashing at a friend's house, and she accused me of unplugging the refrigerator and causing everything to defrost. I said I didn't remember doing that, but I was ready to take care of it financially . After we finished cleaning it up, she suddenly remembered she had done it earlier that evening, when she was looking for an adapter for her charger and forgot to plug it back in. I remember the situation so clearly because in that moment, I reflected on how her first impulse was to blame the intruder. Anyway, I didn't  take that personally because I understood  where it came from, and also because I've experienced it myself from my friend's perspective. The girl in this story, however, finds herself a little disappointed with the mother's accusation being directed at her.

  • In my opinion, the mother’s thought process probably went something like this : “This girl is young, she is immature, the attitude of stealing a small amount of money from a house is immature, therefore it must be her”. I really don’t think, prior to that, the mother considered her suspicious. What I’m trying to say here is that these types of situations tend to be a matter of timing. You recount who was in the house at the time of the theft, and you make assumptions based on that timeframe.

  • If the girl really doesn’t have anything to hide, I don’t think she should stop staying overnight at the house. Things will eventually become clear, and the family will have renewed trust in her. I do think she should wait a little before going back, though. The potential issue here is that the real thief never appears, and they keep framing her. If that happens, it would be really difficult to keep a straight face going to a slumber party at her friend’s house. If I were her, I would let some days go by and try to speak directly to the mother. I believe honesty can be felt. If not, she should protect herself and try to bring the friendship to other territories (literally other places). I’m surprised about how many weird things can happen in life and relationships.lol
